Let’s have a tour to what is a genre and how it impacts your writing.
What is a Genre?
In novel writing, the term genre refers to the theme and the pattern of writing with similar storytelling devices. This conveys the story in an engrossing way to reach a large-scale identifiable audience and spread emotions and intentions amongst the readers.
All the genres of writing fall under two categories –
- Fiction – where the author describes an imaginary but believable setting. This could be prose, drama or poetry with certain literary elements.
- Non-fiction – where the author describes events that are factual or real. This could be a biography or a bibliography.

Whatever genre the writer chooses, it must acuminate their elemental writing skills to actualize the best fiction they can. The focus of each book publisher is to describe other ideas convincingly. The bottom line is to depict how the elements are related and characterized.
Literary Genres of writing fiction –
1. Crime and Mystery
When you say Interesting, thrilling and suspense filled, the first thing that pops to mind are mystery novels.
These types of novels are based on a certain crime setting or detective based or solving a case mysteriously. The sub genres include police procedural, whodunit (crime based), detective, City mysteries or occult detective.
Sherlock Holmes could be the best example of a detective story.
2. Horror
Horror novels are meant to be scary, shocking, horrifying, and daunting. The audience that prefer to read novels related to paranormal activities mostly like horror novels. These may also include witches, evil spirits, deaths, negative energies, etc.
Horror novels, undeniably, indulge you in themselves, they are so interesting! Vampire stories or stories like The Exorcist are countable.
3. Romance
Romantic fiction is a mainstream and likeable category that illustrates a romantic love story between lovers. The stories often have a combination of thriller, mystery, affliction, and separation. Even after so much drama, the lovers face each obstacle together and the novels have an optimistic and emotionally delightful ending!
Books like Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bonte and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen have made us believe that the romantic novel world does exist!
4. Scientific Fiction
Scientific fiction is the most creative and idealized novel with thought-up characters and situations. The setting is generally future based. Also, there could be spy fiction or some interesting invention in future.
It could be amazing and super fascinating stories like science and technology, space examination, parallel universes, and so on.
5. Fantasy
Fantasy novels are speculative fiction stories with unreal characters and plots which are liked by all sorts of audiences including all age groups.
They are often inspired by mythology including the elements of fascination. Example- our all-time favourite Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, the unforgettable, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, etc.
Moreover, Genres create a bubble world and assumptions in the minds of the target audience and make it easier for the writers to understand the content of the story.
